See the Light with
Laser Eye Surgery
While contact lenses and glasses can help you see clearly, many people long for clear vision without corrective devices. Laser eye surgery can offer long-term correction for many people with common vision problems.
At Thompson Rivers Family Optometry, we’re always happy to chat with you about what laser eye surgery entails. We’ll also verify your candidacy for laser eye surgery so you know whether or not it can provide the outcome you want.
If you’re interested in exploring laser eye surgery, start by booking a consultation with us.

Who Is a Candidate for
Laser Eye Surgery?
Laser eye surgery can be a great method of vision correction for many people; however, not everyone is a good candidate for the procedure. During your consultation, we will evaluate whether laser eye surgery is an option for you. We’ll check:
- If your eyes are in good health
- That your prescription is stable
- That your refractive error is within the recommended range
You must be 18 years or older to be considered a candidate for laser eye surgery.
What Is the Consultation Process for Laser Eye Surgery?
If you want laser eye surgery, the first step is to schedule a consultation at our practice. During your visit, we’ll take some measurements and ask questions to help us learn:
- Your current prescription and any recent changes to it
- How thick your cornea is (the clear, front part of your eye)
- Your medical history (as well as your family medical history)
- The general health of your eye and tear film
If we find that you’re a strong candidate for laser eye surgery, we’ll take the time to recommend an appropriate method and discuss your expectations. Then you’ll be able to make an informed decision about whether you want to go ahead with the procedure, and we can recommend surgeons in the area.
After your procedure, we’ll arrange follow-up appointments to check in on the healing process. Follow-ups help us detect any potential complications and address them quickly so you can fully enjoy the results of your surgery.
What Types of Laser Eye Surgery Are Available?
In Canada, there are two main types of laser eye surgery performed: LASIK and PRK.
- LASIK: Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis involves a surgeon making a flap in your cornea. This flap is then folded back, and the remaining layers are reshaped with a precision laser. Once the reshaping is complete, the surgeon will return the flap to its original position, and the cornea will repair itself.
- PRK: Photorefractive keratectomy involves the surgeon removing the top layer of the cornea altogether, then reshaping the remaining layers. Healing from PRK takes a little longer than LASIK, with the initial healing process being complete in about 1 week.
The type of laser eye surgery recommended to you will depend on your refractive error, eye health, and corneal thickness. We’ll discuss all the details specific to you during your consultation. Feel free to ask us any questions you may have.
